Sprankle Studios was formed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama during the summer of 2007 by Chris West, Dave Kilgo, and Alan Lazer. The group’s first venture was into the July Sidewalk Scramble, a 48 hour film-making competition. Whispers, the story of a man who, after losing his ability to speak, develops precognitive abilities that occur when those close to him are in peril, won 2nd place in Division I and put Sprankle Studios on the map as a film-making force in Alabama.

At the beginning of September 2007, Sprankle Studios entered into Campus Movie Fest hosted at the University of Alabama and created their second film, Prometheus. The story of a young man who is unable to wake from his visions of the future, was nominated for Best Picture and was selected by AT&T to be featured on 3G phones throughout the country.

The end of September brought Sprankle Studios to the 9th Annual Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival in Birmingham, AL. I-CAN-D, a film about a vapid boy band who begin using political lyrics in hopes of selling records, was screened to rave reviews.

In March of 2008 Sprankle Studios entered once more into the Sidewalk Scramble film-making competition. The Preacher’s Daughter, the story of a preacher who is reunited with his estranged son while his daughter uncovers a family secret, won 6 awards including; “First Place (Division I)”, “Best Directing (Division I)”, and “Audience Choice (Division I)”. The Preacher’s Daughter was also the first collaboration between Sprankle Studios and actress Wallis Barton.

In July of 2008 Sprankle Studios participated in the special 10 Day Sidewalk Scramble, which commemorated the 10th anniversary of Sidewalk. The 6 minute film, Endless Empire, told the story of a future where an ex-dream-detective inspects the dreams of a loved one in order to uncover the mysteries of her past. Endless Empire was awarded the top prize, “Best in Scramble”, as well as “Best Cinematography” and “Best Use of Inspiration Items”.

At the end of September 2008, The Preacher’s Daughter, Endless Empire, and Christmas Cookies were screened at the 10th Annual Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. Christmas Cookies was a dark comedy in which a mother whips up a batch of holiday goodies, this time, with a new ingredient.

In January 2009 Sprankle Studios entered once more into the Campus Movie Fest - Alabama competition. The Protagonist, the story of an unhappy Deus Ex Machina, won Best Drama at the school level and moved on to regionals where it won Best Editing, was nominated for Best Drama, and was selected by Virgin Airlines to be featured in-flight. The Protagonist will be screening at the Campus Movie Fest International Grand Finale on the Paramount Studios Lot in Los Angeles, CA this June.
